In a recent interview published on Simon Warner’s Rock and the Beat Generation blog, when asked if he still listened to their music, Rikki said: “Yes I do. I particularly like the recording made in the Centre Pompidou in 2016. I can never stop listening to the music.”

The audio edition of Moving Music is published by Recorded Books.

A statement for the book said: “Renowned music manager Rikki Stein has spent nearly six decades moving musicians around the world, and this book recounts a lifetime of adventure on the road. Always in the right place at the right time, Rikki was part of the great countercultural moments of the last century, from Woodstock and the Vietnam War Moratorium March to the launch of Glastonbury Festival.

“Rikki has toured some of the world’s most iconic musicians and groups, from The Jimi Hendrix Experience, The Kinks, The Animals, The Yardbirds, The Moody Blues and the Grateful Dead to managing the Nigerian superstar Fela Kuti and many other iconic artists.

“Rikki’s journey is also a spiritual one, forged by his experience of living among the community of the Musicians of Joujouka, Morocco, who remain a key connection in his life to this day.

“Full of extraordinary, sometimes hilarious, stories of life on the road, this book recounts the joys, frustrations and surprises of juggling logistics, local politics and the whims of his creative clients to deliver true moments of moving music.”

Master Musicians of Joujouka tribute to Brian Jones featured in Mojo magazine

The Master Musicians of Joujouka feature in the latest edition of Mojo

Song written by Mohamed Hamri featured on compilation album with latest edition.

The Master Musicians of Joujouka feature among musical influences of Brian Jones and more who have been inspired by The Rolling Stones lead guitarist and founding member on a CD album presented with the latest issue of Mojo magazine.

The February 2025 edition of Mojo magazine includes a compilation of music that “inspired Jones as a teenager, on to the sounds of India and Morocco that sent him on profound new trajectories”.

A Man of Wealth and Taste: The Brian Jones Companion features the track ‘Brian Jones Zahjouka Very Stoned’ performed by the current group of Master Musicians.

Brian Jones visited the Master Musicians of Joujouka in their village in 1968, with his recordings later released as Brian Jones Presents The Pipes Of Pan At Joujouka.

Mojo said: “Jones’s 1968 trip  with Brion Gyson to record ceremonial music in the village of Joujouka – or Zahjouka – was a critical moment in introducing traditional Moroccan music to a global audience.”

In fact the visit and the recording were organised by Joujouka born, Mohamed Hamri, who looked after the Masters from the late 1940s until his death in 2000. Hamri is one of Morocco’s greatest 20th century painters.

This version of the Master Musicians track is from the Live in Paris album. Howlin’ Wolf, Elmore James, Nico, Lucinda Williams and Ravi Shankar are among other artists features on the 15-track CD.

Following a successful appearance opening the 2023 Glastonbury Festival on the main Pyramid Stage, the Master Musicians of Joujouka also hosted two festivals in 2024 due to intense demand.

The group’s leader Ahmed El Attar said: “In a world with many troubles more and more people want to experience the tranquillity and healing Baraka of our music and our village. We welcome them to come and participate in this great revival.”

The Master Musicians of Joujouka number over a dozen Masters and are aided by dancers including Boujeloud. The Boujeloud ritual pre-dates the Islam Sufi traditions and has been likened to the Rites of Pan, but for Joujouka it is an integral part of the Sufi tradition despite its animistic origins.
